NOTES: Roxas has a heart that he does not know about that has been slowly regrowing over the course of the game prior to his canon point. This doesn't particularly change anything in regards to his personality because he doesn't know about it yet, but hopefully he will figure it out by the end of the mission.
NOTES: Roxas has been aware of his heart and learning more about emotion for a while now, so certain aspects of his personality may be a morphing away from the initial personality here.
CHARACTER INFO.
✖ Character Name: Roxas
✖ Canon: Kingdom Hearts II, Post Twilight Town Prologue
✖ Character Appearance: Here
✖ Character Age: Like literally maybe a year or so, but he looks somewhere around 15 or 16 and acts similarly.
✖ Pick A Number: 313 (preferably), his Organization number was 13, so I'd like that incorporated into whatever he gets.
✖ Canon Setting:At its most simplified, Kingdom Hearts is the really basic struggle between Light and Dark in a multi-verse that's a cross between Final Fantasy and Disney. Moral delineations are really overly simplified, and villains do things because that's what villains do. Each world in the multi-verse is based on a Disney movie, and each world was separated from the others in order to keep them safe. There are only a few who knew beforehand that other worlds were out there.✖ Character History: LINK
When worlds came under attack and began to disappear one by one, the heroes of Light (King Mickey & Co.) were forced to take action, since worlds were colliding with one another anyway as denizens fled their home worlds ravaged by heartless. The reason for this attack was the search for the princesses of heart who could unlock Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts is the ultimate power in this universe, and it can be taken by either the Light or the Dark. Coveted by the Dark and protected by the warriors of the Light, the quest to lock the heart of each world and protect them from the servants of darkness is pretty much The Big Deal.
The meta of this game is pretty much nonsensical the deeper you look at it, so it's honestly a bit hard to explain? Pretty much, there are creatures of darkness called Heartless who steal hearts. If you lose your heart, you become a heartless. What they mean by heart is not the literal blood-pumping variety, but actually more in line with the concept of a 'soul' as your heart is your essence and the source of your emotions. Hearts are where power can come from, good or bad, since someone involved in the darkness can keep their heart but still become totally overrun by the darkness they attempt to wield. The heart is also tied strongly to ones memories, but the way this is used in the game is inconsistent. Sometimes, you keep someone in your heart so strongly you could never forget them, sometimes a person disappears from the world and everyone forgets them.
Sometimes, when a very strong heart is stolen the shell left behind becomes a Nobody. Nobodies are aberrations and affronts to the natural order of things. They are kind of like the equivalent of a zombie? As in, we view zombies as so creepy because continued life after death seems so totally wrong. For the people of Kingdom Hearts, these heartless non-people are pretty much the worst thing ever. (At least that's how Sora acts in Kingdom Hearts II, but the motivations are kind of nebulous.... The only reason seems to be 'because this is what a hero would do.') Not every Nobody comes out the other side of this process as anything intelligent, there are lower level creatures comparable to the Heartless that the higher level Nobodies control.
Nobodies who remember who they used to be, but now without a heart, have no emotions and generally have serious Existential Crisis Angst. Thus, they usually take on a different name and act as a separate entity. It isn't entirely true that they are completely separate though, which we see in Roxas and those Nobodies made under strange circumstances, such as Xion and Namine. These 'strange circumstances' have Somebodies who are still alive and in possession of their hearts (no one understands why this is possible, it isn't really explained beyond 'special nobodies') In them we can see lingering ties to their Somebodies through limited emotion, weird dreams/memories, and the ability to rejoin with their Somebodies, which is what both Namine and Roxas eventually do. Xion was actually some kind of Roxas clone and ended up rejoining with him so he in turn could rejoin with Sora.
It all makes sense, in an allegorical way, as long as you don't actually think about it too hard, but as soon as you actually try to form something logical out of the meta it turns into a lot of nonsense that sums up with 'because Disneyland Magic.' I don't really get into games beyond Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts II because the more games they've put out the more complicated it's gotten. I dabble a little into 358/2 Days because Xion is a part of Roxas by Kingdom Hearts II, and because it illuminates how his life was when he was first 'created' and knew nothing, but... yeah. Like I said, every game tries to bring in new elements to keep things fresh, but really just gets crazier and crazier when you take it in the context of what already existed.
✖ Character Personality:The point in time that I prefer to take Roxas from has a lot to do with how I represent his personality. There are several reasons for this. The first is his time spent in Twilight Town, interacting as a normal teenager, and the second is his subsequent disillusionment.
TWILIGHT TOWN. Prior to his time in the simulation of Twilight Town, Roxas's only interaction with other kids was from a distance. 'Play' and 'having fun' were completely foreign to him, which could be forgiven considering how recently his non-existence had begun. He used to watch the kids of Twilight Town play with a breathless naivety and desire to understand. In the simulation itself, he's been graced with a set of false memories which have removed some of this innocence from him, not in a negative fashion but one of experience and age that aren't truly his. He is aware of this discrepancy in his subconscious, and although he has memories of being close friends with Pence, Hayner, and Olette he can actually be quite withdrawn from them. His thoughts and emotion see him drifting into a world of inner uncertainty that his friends can see but not quite understand, and lacking understanding himself cannot explain it to them in order to bridge that gap. He is different from them, in just the way that he has false experiences he cannot quiet explain, his true experiences also lurk beneath the surface, strange and yet familiar. His true experiences are of violence and intrigue as a part of the Organization. Among other children, this makes him wise beyond his years. In his group of friends, Roxas is honestly the true leader. While Hayner is more outspoken, Roxas is the voice of wisdom and is the one who stands up to threats. This mixture of naivety and experience creates a strange mixture of Roxas, always feeling like an outlier.
DISILLUSIONMENT. At the point I like to pull Roxas from, he has already resigned himself to being returned to Sora. His decision to give up his tentative existence does show that he has a very strong moral compass. This does not, however, mean that he does not have some resentful feelings about the process. He wanted more than anything to have his own existence, and now he knows that he can never really have it. His destiny is always to return to Sora, to have no more agency, no more influence, no more experiences of his own. It gives him a melancholiness, something that is only further heightened by what he feels was the betrayal of Axel, the only friend he remembers. If he remembered Xion clearly, he would feel similarly pained over how terribly wrong emotional attachments can go. He wants to feel like he has a heart, to care for others, but he's a little wounded and distrustful of the true motives of others. In truth, however, he's still a bit gullible because he wants to believe in others just that badly. His experiences have tempered him though, he won't immediately trust the way he did when he was drafted into the Organization. (Although please see the CDC section below for some explanation of why he goes with the agents.)
CHILD. Roxas has had a lot of experiences in a very short amount of time. But in the end, even his false memories only encompass youth. There's still a lot for him to learn, and any experiences that he can have, he wants to have them. As a Nobody, he is haunted like the others by a certain emptiness in himself, something that he can almost drown out by being present in the moment and not shying from new experiences. He loves to learn and to challenge himself. This tendency can, however, make him reckless. Truthfully, he views fear as a waste of what little time he has, and is very opinionated. When he gets something into his head, it's difficult to get him to change his mind. He's been badly burned by listening to others, and would prefer to trust his own instincts. Arguing with him when he's made a decision can be magnificent way to set off his ferocious temper. Roxas can and will fight for what he wants and believes in. His beliefs and wants are what he has in the strange ephemeral 'existence' he resides in, he's very protective of them.
QUESTIONING. Roxas is rarely content. As a Nobody, he's felt the weight of the existential crisis, not only that he doesn't know for what purpose he exists, but that he shouldn't. His existence is an unnatural one, one destined to be fizzled out or destroyed. This raises questions for him about the nature of the universe, fundamental questions that no one can answer and this frustrates him incredibly. He doesn't like the answer "that's the way it is," he wants to be able change and influence things and will do whatever he can to see it done, even if it puts himself at risk. If he can't figure out in what way to make a change however, it puts him in that melancholy mood, and he will stew and stew and stew over the problem until a solution comes. He's a dog with a bone, he lets nothing go, even if it's poisonous.
TEMPER. Roxas can be a cranky little fuck. He really is quite short-tempered, as I mentioned before he is very staunch when he makes a decision and does not at all stand for others trying to get in the way of it. He can unleash his temper even on people he cares about if they push him too far. With those he has kind feelings towards though, it is more likely for him to snippy or snide to discourage further discussion if he really doesn't want to have it. Unversed in emotion, anger is really just an easy place to go in order to put others off. He was never really taught better, the way you solve problems in the Organization is violence. Roxas absolutely will not back down from a fight, especially not after regaining his memories of his time in the Organization.
JOY. Roxas's mind is often clouded with unpleasant thoughts. His short-temper is a symptom of unhappy times and betrayal, but he is not devoid of innocence just yet. He is still a part of Sora, who has boundless amounts of love and happiness to give. These moments can flare up in Roxas as well. As I've said, he does want to love and have joy, and when he earnestly feels these things, his excitement for it increases exponentially. When he is truly happy, there are no doubts about it, it shows in him brilliantly and it's something those who know him and care for him treasure and admire. Roxas is very loyal to these people, and longs to show them his bright spots.
OUTLIER. Unlike Sora, Roxas has markedly less black-and-white moral views. Existing in a grey area, Roxas has more sympathy and a desire to help others like himself who are being villainized or marginalized just because the world doesn't understand them. This can get him in trouble if you refer back to his gullibility, he could be drawn in by someone dark if they presented their situation to him in the proper light. His opinionated nature and deep loyalty would make it very difficult to snap him out of such a thrall.
THE TRUTH. Despite learning many of his early life lessons from the Organization, Roxas just isn't much of a liar. He's a very earnest and truthful person, even if he were to try to lie the truth usually shows on his face anyway. That's why he states his opinions and beliefs without subtlety, that's why his moments of happiness are so bright. He may evade answering something if he's hesitant to disclose his feelings, or hurt someone else's, but even at the worst of times he would not deceive if it were to make a real impact (a harmless prank might be a different story for a teenage boy though.) In the end though, his feelings, his beliefs, his opinions, his hopes: they're all important to him and he wouldn't cloud them with deceptions. His memories and self-identity have been messed with, illusions and lies surrounding him. He doesn't want any part of it, and he won't like it if he thinks he's being deceived.
CDC. This section is specific to the game. Since the CDC has approached Roxas and given him a 'quest' of his own, he won't be going into the game like he usually does. He usually has questions about if he deserves to be there and if Sora is going to be okay without him. Being offered a quest is in short, a chance to earn his right to exist, and the CDC will have assuaged him that Sora is alright.
Roxas is fighting more for the chance to win his own heart than he is trying to protect his worlds, if completely honest. As far as he's concerned, Sora has that under control. He will be conflicted about destroying other worlds to get what he wants, but he has a ruthless streak that he can tap into through his temper and will likely power through it. In the future he may decide this is a bad deal, but honestly if the CDC really gives him his heart? He will be unspeakably grateful, and that's worth a lot of loyalty from him.
It also really depends on what kind of bonds he makes in his unit. His consignment won't have been entirely forthright, so he will have already agreed before he knew the entirety of what was going on, the temptation of getting his own chance again was just too much to resist. He will be committed through at least one mission before he might start trying to buck the system. Or he might like his place in the unit and get comfortable, like I said it really depends on CR at that point. It's not that he couldn't get behind destroying worlds, if it was pitched to him the right way.
✖ Character Powers: A BUNCH OF STUFF. Mostly he's preternaturally quick/agile and he's strong, he wields two magical blades. I usually play him as having forgotten most of his magic due to the tricks played on his memory, since he doesn't use any of it even upon remembering himself in Twilight Town. His magic could be regained with training and practice.
Question: The Organization XIII is known for the 'Door to Darkness' which allows them to traverse the Darkness to other places unharmed (no hearts to corrupt or steal), will he be able to use this?
CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV: link
✖ Third Person POV: He used to dream about this, when he had a body of his own to lay down to rest. He used to dream about the blackness, falling into it as if he were sinking slowly to the bottom of a weightless ocean. He remembers the explosion of light as the thousands of doves stirred suddenly at the touch of his foot, a flurry so similar to a sudden shattering: shards fleeing in every direction. He remembers the delicacy of the stained glass under his heavy feet, the musical way it chimed as if it might break at any moment.
He wasn't expecting to see this place again. He was expecting to drift away, to be slowly enveloped into all that was Sora.
He looks around, like he always does, waiting for some clue as to why he was here. There was always a reason, always a gravity to this strange place between sleeping and waking, as if the high arches of some holy structure hung above him, obscured by the shadows.
We have a quest for you.
The voice does not echo, and Roxas suspects that the words were not spoken, but whispered into his mind, where Sora would not hear them. There is something painfully exciting about that, that someone would seek out only Roxas. The keyblade hero has no place here.
He purses his lips, tries to keep the hopefulness off of his face, turning and turning, waiting for something to reveal itself.
There are three of them when he faces forward again. Their skin is blue and their faces are eyeless. It is grotesque to him, only the more base of the Nobodies were born without eyes, and while they were lithe and they were clever, they were little more than sad abstractions, ghosts repeating the same gestures they had once enacted in life; over and over again.
Roxas. Duty awaits you.
Their blue lips do not move, their hands clasped before themselves as if in serenity, fingers inhumanly long.
"What do you mean?" he answers, and in response to his voice he hears only the far-fluttering wings of the doves.
We will destroy it all.
It is not the promise of a friend, and he scowls, set on edge like a cat. He repeats, growling, "What do you mean?"
You will join us. One gestures with a hand, and then another, each in turn, palms extended. You will protect your worlds. You will be rewarded.
Their certainty is infuriating, and he closes his eyes, clenching his fists. They do not let him boil for long,
Come with us. Your quest awaits.
'Your quest' it echoes inside him as no other word has since this strange dream began. It brings a warmth into his being, a light. He is jealously hungry for something of his own again.
He grits his teeth. Thinks again about what they said, We will destroy it all.
He cannot trust them.
But he goes to their hands, and they encircle him.
And they take him from the darkness where once he had thought to drift away.
CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team: Green
✖ Mission Freebie: He wants a heart of his own -- the 'essence' kind, not the blood-pumping organ. It would be really interesting to actually play out that scenario for him.
✖ Personal Item or Weapon: Keyblades.
✖ Character Inventory:Nothing but his clothes. His keyblades are inter-dimensional, he doesn't have to 'carry' them to summon them.
